Llythyr gan Ein Rheithor Elaine ~ A Letter from Elaine, our Rector

Rhagfyr 2014

Gwibiodd yr amser ers i mi ysgrifennu “ pwy ydy Elaine” yn gynharach yn y flwyddyn. Wrth ysgrifennu hwn rwyf wedi bod yn Rheithor arnoch am bedair awr ar hugain! Roedd y Gwasanaeth Sefydlu yn wych ac yn achlysur arbennig- yn hyfryd cyfarfod cymaint ohonoch, ac edrychaf ymlaen at ddod i’ch adnabod.

Pythefnos yn ôl wrth i ni symud i mewn i’r Rheithordy , yng ngolau’r haul gwelsom ysblander y mynyddoedd, a’m hatgoffodd o greadigrwydd hynod Duw.

Fodd bynnag bore wedyn- gorchuddiwyd y tirwedd gan niwl a tharth, a chuddiwyd y bryniau yn y pellter. Wrth i’r dyddiau fynd heibio, mae wedi fy nharo bod y newid tirwedd mynych yn adlewyrchu ein taith ffydd a thaith bywyd. Un munud rydym ar ben ein digon a’r nesaf ar goll yn y niwl! Lle bynnag yr ydych ar y funud , mae’n werth cofio bod Iesu yn cyd gerdded gyda ni yn yr amseroedd “ niwlog” yn ogystal a’r heulwen bendigedig.

Gyda dyfodiad yr Adfent, mae’n werth ystyried pwysigrwydd y tymor fel amser o baratoi a disgwyl. Rhy hawdd o lawer ydy cael ein trechu gan “ niwl” dulliau a egwyddorion masnach, ac anghofio gwir reswm ein “ disgwyl.” Rhaid cyfaddef – nid yw disgwyl yn sgil sy’n dod yn hawdd- yn enwedig yn ein cymdeithas sydd eisiau “ boddhad mewn amrantiad” – ac felly mae’r awydd i anwybyddu yr Adfent yn un cryf.......

Ers wythnosau bellach mae y siopau yn llawn cardiau Nadolig/ cynigion arbennig ac addurniadau. Yn ogystal a hyn cawn ein hwynebu gan gylchgronau, hysbysebion a llith gwerthiant sydd yn rhoi pwysau aruthrol i ddod o hyd i’r anrhegion gorau, i edrych yn berffaith, i gael y goeden Nadolig fwyaf addurnedig, ac i ddarparu’r wledd gofiadwy. Gyda’r holl weithgareddau cyffrous yma, nid hawdd ydy dod o hyd i amser i lonyddu ac adlewyrchu.

Dwi wrth fy modd gyda’r Nadolig, addurno’r goeden, y goleuadau- ac yn wir onid da o beth yw ein bod yn mynd y filltir olaf i ddathlu genedigaeth Crist? Peth da – os mai dyna ydym yn wir wneud. Y broblem ydy ein bod yn gallu mynd ar goll yn y “ niwl.”

Yr Adfent hwn , efallai yr hoffech wneud amser bob dydd, nid yn unig i agor eich calendr Adfent – ond i wneud amser i lonyddu ac adlewyrchu ar wir ystyr y Nadolig.

Rydw i a phil yn edrych ymlaen i rannu ein tymor Adfent a’n Nadolig cyntaf gyda chi. Boed i chi ddilyn goleuni Crist yr Adfent hwn hyd at Orfoledd Dydd y Nadolig.

Gyda phob bendith a chariad,

Elaine.

December 2014

Time seems to have flown since I wrote my “introduction to Elaine” piece earlier in the year. I have now been your Rector for 24 hours as I write! The induction service in Christ Church was a wonderful and very special occasion – it was lovely to meet so many of you, and I look forward to getting to know you.

As we moved into the Rectory a couple of weeks ago, the sunshine was highlighting the beautiful outlook over the mountains, and reminding me of God’s amazing creativity.

Yet the next morning – the landscape had been clouded in mist and fog, blotting out hills in the distance. As the days have passed, it struck me that the ever-changing landscape frequently reflects our journey of faith and life. One minute we feel on top of the world, and the next we’re lost in the fog! Wherever you are at the moment, it’s worth remembering that Jesus walks with us through the bleakest “foggy” times as well as the glorious sunshine.

With Advent approaching, it’s worthwhile considering the importance of the season as a time of waiting and preparation. It is too easy to be overcome by “the fog” of commercialism and forget the real reason we are “waiting”. Let’s face it – waiting is not a skill that comes naturally – especially in our society of “instant satisfaction” – and so the impulse to ignore Advent is a strong one...

The shops have been full of Christmas cards/special offers and decorations for weeks now. On top of this, we are faced with magazine articles, advertisements and sales pitches that create enormous pressure to find the best presents, to look perfect, to have the best dressed tree, and to provide a feast to remember. With all this frantic activity, it isn’t easy to find time to reflect or to be still.

Personally, I love Christmas - decorating the tree, the lights – and is it not good that we ‘pull out all the stops’ to celebrate the birth of Christ? Well yes – if that is what we’re really doing. The problem is that we can become lost in “the fog.”

This advent, you might like to make some time each day, not only to open your Advent Calendars - but to make some time to be still and reflect upon the true meaning of Christmas. Phil and I are really looking forward to sharing our first Advent and Christmas season with you in Bala. May you follow the light of the Christ-child this Advent to the Joy of Christmas Day.

With love and every blessing,

Elaine
